Art & Design

Intent

At Battle Primary Academy, we aim to provide a high-quality Art and design curriculum that will build in children a love of the creative process and equip children with the skills and enthusiasm to explore their own creativity at home or at work in creative industries.

Our Art and Design curriculum helps to build cultural capital in our children, introducing them to different artists and movements of art, and helping them to be inspired by art and feel confident to respond to this in their own work.

Art, in the National Curriculum, is focussed in the key areas of drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture and should enable children to use and experiment with different materials and techniques for producing art. Keeping a sketchbook to help children develop their ideas and experiencing the creative process is crucial to their education.

Implementation

• Ensure that all pupils acquire basic skills in art and design and to enable them to understand and experience the creative process

• Provide children with a relevant, challenging and enjoyable curriculum through weekly art lessons

• Children are introduced to a wide range of famous artists

• Cover all national curriculum requirements and link their projects with their wider learning where appropriate to help make connections

• Equip children with the confidence and capability to explore the creative process through sketch books and embedding evaluation into their practice.

Impact

A high quality art and design education is a crucial part of preparing children for a future in a world where creative industries and employment opportunities in the UK are expanding year on year. We strive to help children master the basic skills in drawing, painting and making that will be useful in their future lives from design and creative applications at home, to wider cultural knowledge and appreciation of artists and creatives, as well as work place applications in industry or creative design.
